In the era of social media, aesthetic treatments have become as casual as a “lunch break” activity. Hyaluronic acid fillers, thread lifts, and skin-tightening treatments appeal to all age groups due to their quick results and lack of surgical incisions. However, the German Society of Plastic, Reconstructive and Aesthetic Surgeons (DGPRÄC) has issued a stern warning: Minimally invasive does not mean risk-free.
“Filler Fatigue”: The Exhaustion of Tissue and Its Decline
Dr. Dirk Richter, Vice President of the DGPRÄC and a renowned facial surgeon, points out that the long-term effects of frequent and excessive use of hyaluronic acid fillers can be far more destructive than most patients realize. Surgeons frequently encounter residual filler material during operations—remnants from injections that patients often do not even remember receiving.
Repeated filler injections over time can lead to a condition known as “Filler Fatigue.” Dr. Richter emphasizes that patients eventually reach a point where fillers no longer produce the desired effect, and their tissues become “fatigued” and deformed. Excessive filler use can permanently alter the natural structure of the subcutaneous tissue, leading to:
Scarring and Adhesions: Creating internal tissue damage that is difficult to reverse.
Surgical Compromise: Making future necessary surgical procedures significantly more difficult to perform and less successful.
Unnatural Appearance: Leading to a “puffy,” “frozen,” or distorted facial expression that loses its natural harmony.
Is Hylase a Savior or a New Danger?
Hylase (hyaluronidase), often used to treat filler complications like nodules, misplacement, or vascular occlusions, is frequently viewed as a “magic fix.” However, scientific evidence shows that Hylase is not selective; it breaks down not only the injected filler but also the body’s own natural hyaluronic acid. This can disrupt the tissue’s natural balance and complicate the healing process. Using this enzyme excessively after repeated filler treatments can lead to tissue loss and even more irregular aesthetic outcomes.
The Critical Importance of Choosing the Right Doctor
Dr. Richter identifies a major tragedy in the current industry: practitioners without surgical training often fail to offer surgical alternatives and do not account for the long-term tissue changes their treatments cause.
Critical Warnings for Your Safety:
Verify Credentials: Research thoroughly whether your practitioner has comprehensive plastic and aesthetic surgical training.
Avoid Excess: The misconception that “more filler equals a younger look” is dangerous; excessive use can permanently damage your tissue.
Demand Alternatives: Ask about long-term solutions, not just quick, minimally invasive fixes.
Don’t Trust Social Media: Your health and appearance depend on medical expertise and surgical experience, not social media popularity.
The DGPRÄC is now calling for urgent political action to establish higher quality standards for patient safety in this largely unregulated aesthetic market.
